About Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia or male breast development refers to the condition of breast development in a male. It can occur in boys and men of all ages and is most common in infancy and adolescence and in middle-aged to older men. The development of male breast is felt to be an imbalance of hormones. This imbalance can occur through many mechanisms and directly affects breast tissue at different stages of life. these stages are marked during infanancy which will resolve by it self, pubertal which occurs at about 14 years of age and during adulthood. Gynecomastia should be investigated by your doctor to make sure there are no underlying medical problems.
Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast over-development, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases.
For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. Dr. Broujerdi performs most of these male breast reduction surgeries with lipocontouring and in some cases with minimal incisions placed in well concealed areas of the chest allowing for a faster healing time as well as minimal signs of surgery. For patients with massive weight loss and hanging lose skin, Dr. Broujerdi will use incisions around the nipple and under the breast crease to remove the excess skin. When the procedure is complete, Dr. Broujerdi closes the incisions with internal small stitches and covers them with bandages. A small drainage tube may be inserted in your skin for several days to drain excess fluid from the surgery.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
